End the Crime of Human and Sexual Trafficking

AALAC supports policies that deal effectively with the growing crime of human and sexual trafficking.  Human trafficking, which includes sexual trafficking, is one of the fastest growing criminal industries in the world and generates approximately $32 billion in profits for criminals that victimize 27 million people here and abroad.   Sadly, Atlanta is emerging as a hub for human trafficking on the East Coast.

AALAC also believes state legislation targeting sexual and human traffickers is an example of legally sound, state immigration policy which successfully tackles a specific crime arising from the flow of undocumented immigrants while treating the victims with fairness and dignity.  Although there is no specific type of person that fall victim to human trafficking, some of the most vulnerable populations include youth, refugees and individuals fleeing conflict, and immigrants including undocumented immigrants.  Undocumented immigrants are especially vulnerable because of their lack of legal status, language barriers, limited employment options, and social isolation.

In fact, the largest group of human trafficking victims in the US comes from Asia and the Pacific Islands.   As an organization dedicated to promoting the rights of Asian Americans in the Southeast, we are aware of many in our community that are hurt or know someone who is hurt by a perpetrator who will use force, fraud, or threats against a woman (including threats of calling the police or ICE when the victim is undocumented) in order to make someone work against her will.  The language barrier and resulting social isolation, and the growing hostility towards immigrants in our state, make it that much harder for these victims to find and receive help.   This form of slavery must not be tolerated.
