Coalitions / PAAN

“There must be, not a balance of power, but a community of power; not organized rivalries, but an organized peace.”
Woodrow Wilson

AALAC believes in the power of community organizing, and in the positive changes that result when groups and individuals mobilize around issues that impact us all.  AALAC is a part of several local and regional coalitions.  AALAC strives to build not only consensus within our diverse Asian American communities but also with other interest groups.

In 2009, AALAC’s staff formed a pioneering coalition of mostly Asian and Pacific Islander grassroots community organizations, business associations, student and faith-based groups that were interested in local advocacy work.  The group, now called the Pan Asian Action Network, is committed to promoting and protecting the health, civil and human rights of Asian Pacific Islander American citizens and residents of Georgia

PAAN members mobilized in 2009 and 2010 to successfully defeat an English-only driver license bill that violated federal law and would have deprived tens of thousands of limited English proficient immigrant citizens and legal residents from obtaining their permanent driver licenses.  The driver license campaign catalyzed a disparate and diverse group of mostly cultural and professional Asian organizations to speak out in concert for Asian Americans and other immigrants in Georgia.  PAAN’s efforts were instrumental in defeating this bill, and helped educate many Asian Americans on civil rights law and the power of organizing work.

Below is a current list of our PAAN members.  If you are a not-for-profit, non-partisan organization that is interested in joining PAAN, please contact Helen at helen@aalegal.org.
